This is an excellent question. Around 7 million years ago, our ancestors may have looked something like a modern day chimpanzee, however, as we evolved and changed over those 7 million years we became more bipedal (so walking on two legs) and lost much of our body hair. Our brains size also started to increase and we began to use and make tools (initially from stone, wood, and bone). eventually, around 300 thousand years ago, our species Homo sapiens starts to evolve in Africa and this is when you start to see people who looked like we do today appearing in the archaeological record.
