DNA mutations can occur at any time during development and life in general, so it is possible to have a genetic trait or disease that is unique to you. The is called ‘de novo’ mutation. However, this mutation will be an alteration of the DNA originally from your parents, as we start off as an almost equal mixture of both. Just a little bit more of your mother as there are some genes found in mitochondria and these always come from your mother. One interesting medical development has been the use of donor eggs, for families with mitochondrial disease (diseases caused by faulty genes in the mitochondria). These would use a donor egg from from a woman with healthy mitochondria, to receive the nuclear DNA from the mother and father. The nuclear DNA from the egg donor would be removed first. The embryo would then have DNA from three different people.
