What is the CHRISTMAS LECTURES Zone?

The online STEM activity focuses on identity, evolution and genetics. It links to this year’s Royal Institution CHRISTMAS LECTURES theme  — the fundamental question “Who am I?”. The Lectures bring our evolutionary story to life and ask challenging questions about the future of our species…

Students will connect with a range of scientists and experts (geneticists, ethicists, archaeologists, psychologists, computer scientists and more) including this year’s CHRISTMAS LECTURES presenters Professor Alice Roberts and Professor Aoife McLysaght, and other contributors to the Lectures.

What can my class do?

Your class will go online to ask their questions to a group of experts, including Alice and Aoife, from the broadcast of the lectures until the 1st February 2019. Students will connect with scientists and staff investigating our evolutionary story, looking at our relationship to other species, and working on the future of genetics.

The online activity is flexible, allowing you to book a live chat at a time that suits your class this January. For more information, email michaela@mangorol.la.

How does it work?

1. Register your place in the event

Already signed up to I’m a Scientist or I’m an Engineer? Click the link in the registration email we sent you at the start of November.
New to these online projects? Register your place using this form. Be sure to check the box marked ‘CHRISTMAS LECTURES Zone’
Final deadline to register: Monday 10th December

2. Run the lessons with your students

Run two lessons with your students during January. Students can log in to the CHRISTMAS LECTURES Zone to read the experts’ profiles, ASK their questions and take part in a 30 minute, text-based live CHAT.

3. Students become more enthused about science, and think deeply about the wider implications of advances in science.
