It’s said to be an excess of cells or blood vessels that cause birthmarks.
I have one on my foot and my dad has one on his cheek.

when I’m scanning I sometimes see then internally on people’s organs. They are common in the liver, where they are called haemangioma. I have two very small ones on my liver, but they’re hard to find (It’s a great way to test how well the students can scan a liver …. shhhh don’t tell anyone 😉 )

the NHS site gives some of the different types of birth mark
