The short answer is I do not know the answer to this !

Based on a quick read, it would seem that handedness (your preference for using one hand rather than the other) is set early in brain development and is under some genetic influence, but the exact genes (and number of genes) is still largely unknown. The few genes that have been identified seem to be involved in brain symmetry.
