As in most attributes and characteristics it is likely to have been driven by evolution. Smarter humans were better able to cope with the environment and so were able to pass on their genes. Whereas, the less smart humans were eaten by woolly mammoths or fell in to deep ravines before being able to have children. Over many generations this has led to humans having a very well developed brain which is capable of undertaking complex tasks.
