This is a great question and it seems to change through time depending on what human ancestor you refer to. But largely from about 2-3 million years ago, our human ancestors seem to have had an omnivorous diet (so eating meat and vegetative matter) with a focus on high quality proteins. We can also see that people like the Neanderthals also exploited shellfish as well as big game (like mammoth, reindeer and ibex) and ate plant food like seaweed. Our species (Homo sapiens) also had a varied diet and ate big game meats, shellfish, fish and plant food as well.
