A lazy eye (also called “amblyopia”) describes an eye that doesn’t see well. This is usually because for some reason in the first years of life the brain did not receive a good image from that eye (for example because it was pointing in the wrong direction or because there was a cloudy lens in the eye or because glasses were needed). The right connections between eye and brain don’t develop. The symptoms are poor vision in that eye that cannot be corrected later on by glasses. A child with amblyopia can be treated to improve the vision, so it is important they are seen in a hospital eye department. For an adult, it is often too late to improve the vision to normal levels if the cause of the vision problem is amblyopia. If the vision problem is not caused by amblyopia, then people should see their optician or eye doctor to find out what the cause is.
