So this is an interesting question. In prehistoric times we did not always just live in caves. It would seem that most human populations in the past utilised both caves and open air camp sites as they moved across the landscapes. However, it is from around 10-8 thousand years ago that people seem to have started building cities and more permanent settlements. These early sites can be found largely in the Middle East and seem to coincide with the advent of farming and agriculture.
