The most common cause of a tear in the retina is pulling from the vitreous, which is a jelly-like substance inside the eye that is attached to the retina. It pulls in everyone, but for some reason in a few people it can cause a tear. Sometimes we treat it by lasering around the tear to stop any more of the retina tearing and becoming a “retinal detachment”. This webpage tells you more about retinal detachments: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/detached-retina-retinal-detachment/
