I am a doctor who sees patients with problems that affect their vision. In particular, I see patients with genetic conditions affecting the retina. The retina is the nerve layer at the back of the eye which detects light and generates electrical signals, which are then sent to the brain allowing us to see. It’s a bit like the chip in the camera of a smartphone. My research involves discovering new things about how the retina works. We can detect the electrical signals from the retina by placing electrodes around the eye and this can tell us about what the nerve cells in the retina do in response to light.
